This was the hardest article to write honestly, because the finding is exactly the one that suits us — which is the worst possible moment to stop checking.
In 2023 a preregistered survey of the effects of the Reboot/NoFap movement was published. Among people who reported a slip after attempting abstinence, 28.9% reported suicidal thoughts[1]. Alongside that sit observations of the forums themselves: hostile behaviour, misogynistic content, posts urging people to hurt themselves.
The number is high and worth pausing on. But before anyone quotes it as proof, three things have to be said.
What the study does not show
What follows anyway
If this were all we had, we would build nothing on it. But it converges with two things that are independent of this study and methodologically stronger.
First: a meta-analysis of digital peer support covering 73 mental-health studies found that apps and video conferencing produced moderate effects, while forums and discussion boards produced small ones — SMD 0.21[2]. A forum is the weakest form of support in this whole family, even when nobody on it is attacking anybody.
Second: the review of moral incongruence finds that feeling addicted to pornography is often better explained by the gap between a person's beliefs and their behaviour than by how often they use it[3]. A place that widens that gap daily is doing the opposite of helping.
How this shaped the product
Three decisions, all from the above:
- No public forum, no feed, no chat with strangers. The only interaction is a closed group you invite yourself.
- No global leaderboards. One day at the bottom of a table is enough to leave in a worse state than you arrived.
- The screen after a slip is a safety screen. No red, no reset animation, and if somebody says they feel low, the phone numbers are on the surface immediately — never behind a "more information" link.
These are not conclusions drawn from one study. They are conclusions drawn from three independent lines pointing the same way, where being wrong in the other direction is not reversible.
